OPEN RISK TAKER (VIVY)

Vivy Yusof is a risk taker because she spend RM100K of her and Fadza savings and borrowings. She doesn’t care if the money that she spend not worth it but she believes and take the risk to borrow the money and open the business called FashionValet. After two years on the relatively new e-commerce scene, they participated and won MYEG Make The Pitch Season 2, a nationwide TV programme, in 2012. They were able to expand FashionValet with our winnings and the exposure from the show widened our audience.

They had to do everything from scratch with the limited amount of capital they had. Meeting local brands every day and convincing them of this new idea was easy because they were excited about the new online shopping phenomenon, and with her blog following, they connected the 2 parties (designers and customers) together. Their challenge was more on the tech side, everything was outsourced in the beginning from website design to payment gateway to managing bugs etc. They learned a great deal and the learning curve was very steep.

They definitely had their fair share of highs and lows, from dealing with competitors to a small flood in their office. Starting your own company and creating a whole new “comfort zone” is terrifying, you’re constantly thinking “will this work?” “is there another way we should be doing this?” said Vivy, but with the right determination, support and a little bit of luck, she believe they can take on any difficulties that come their way.

She think that their difficulty was the lack of capital. RM100K is what e-commerce stores spend on marketing per month but for them, that was all they had to do everything. With RM 100K, a huge portion already went to office and warehouse renovation or rent, they had to purchase stock whereby a large chunk was consignment so that helped ease the load and then they put the rest into marketing which even that wasn’t a lot. They didn’t take salary for a few months until the company was stable.

OBSERVANT (VIVY)

Vivy at first, she wanted to be a businessperson and a dream to open a real estate based company.  However, due to the fashion world obsessed and prone shopping experience for five years during the study in London She intends to open a fashion business called FashionValet.net of a web local designers sell their work through online. She make an observation regarding her business and notice that fashion industry can be successful if she knows what people needs and wants.

She was excited by the population in London who so appreciates the work of local designers and fashion development there makes it as motivation to open up a fashion business through the web. However, she put a limit to sell clothes that are not outrageous and disrespectful. She is to be selective in choosing a design that will participate in this FashianValet.net because she will only choose designs that are relevant to wear, simple, polite, do not overdo it and make sure the quality of the goods and beautiful to wear. She was fond of and willing to tighten their belts just for shopping through online takes up the challenge with open a business after graduation through the web in Malaysia because at that time she realized technology development in Malaysia is booming.

Busy with everyday tasks at the office in order to help her manage the business deal of her father caused she have no enough time to go to mall and caused traffic congestion in Kuala Lumpur. She have took proactive steps to figure out how she should do something to facilitate the purchase of goods by means faster and fun with her best friend, Fadzarudin Maher.

Fashion clothes in FashionValet selling price start from RM170 and above. Vivy recognized that the price of products sold in FashionValet is quite expensive but they hold to the principle of providing quality products to customers. FashionValet has a special team in charge of the quality of all of the products sold in FashionValet.

VISIONARY (VIVY)

A visionary entrepreneur is one who is able to see what others are not able to see. In other words, this class of entrepreneurs have the right kind of picture in their mind that lets them know what will be the outcome of their business venture. Visionary entrepreneurs are differ from business owners in the sense that they have prior vision of what they want to do and achieve in their life. Vision is important to the success of a business since no one wants to wind up a business after years of toiling with it as an overworked and underpaid employee.

So, Vivy Yusof is one of the entrepreneur that really compatible for this trait. When she is in London, she always shops online and even for groceries. When she back to Malaysia, she saw the opportunity because Malaysian not so use to e-commerce. She slowly plans for e-commerce business with her best friend and now her husband, Fadzaruddin Shah Anuar. Vivy really loves fashion so that she wants to build a business for fashion. When she was in London back then, most of the business there, really appreciate for local brands, so she thought of starts a business with a local design brands and make it popular not even in Asia but in the eyes of the world.

With a starts of RM 100,000 Vivy and Fadza build an e-commerce business names, FashionValet.net and only with 10 local brands that had been collected. As an entrepreneur, she used to face many challenges and during her ups and down, she never thought of giving up for what she has started with Fadza. They went through it together. Another opportunity came up, Vivy and Fadza went into competition for MyEG Make The Pitch which provided them with much-needed funds to further their marketing plans and expand their customer base and now FashionValet has changed its names to FashionValet.com to more worldwide. Vivy never missed the changes that come through and always looks into another level to make their business becomes the biggest.

OPEN CULTURE (VIVY)

Open culture in entrepreneurship meaning is a concept according to which knowledge should be spread freely and its growth should come from developing, altering or enriching already existing works on the basis of sharing and collaboration, without being restricted by rules linked to the legal protection of intellectual property. In a context of globalization, the consequences are that all citizens should have equal access to information. Nowadays, most of the consumer want something that is creative especially the youngster.

Vivy Yusof was keen in to see the development of fashion in United Kingdom and does not want to be left behind. Thus, she always keeps her appearance feminine. Besides, the United Kingdom residents are appreciative about the local designer’s works. Thus, establishing an online shopping process is also not a novelty in that country at that time. Compare to Malaysian, most of the people in United Kingdom would love to shopping through online rather than going to the mall and need to go through traffic jammed. Otherwise, people in United Kingdom even online shopping for groceries. Upon her graduation, she came back to Malaysia and she helped her father in the business or real estate. Even though she could not find the real satisfaction and she has deep interest in fashion.

She yearned to shopping through online as she had been busy each day with tasks in the office and caused her do not have time to shopping. Inspire by the open culture in United Kingdom, she always aware that the development of information technologies is rapidly increasing. She decided launched an online shopping center named FashionValet.net (FV) which is the hub of local fashion designs. She started this business with her partners who is the founder and also used to be her colleagues in UK, Fadzaruddin Shah Anuar and Asma ‘Nasaruddin.

When first business she has established, she moved along in the team to find local designers. For the first time, they were able to collect a total of 15 local designers but they do not have office yet. However, she still has to be selective in choosing a design that will marketed in FashionValet. With open culture, she wants to introduce local designers of FV to the world and want to open the eyes of Malaysian consumers to appreciate the local design and because of her, people nowadays are tend to be more appreciate of the local design. Most of online entrepreneur nowadays are make her as one of their inspiration in business and also for fashion.

TASK 1(b) - TRAITS

One of the successful entrepreneur that we choose is Vivy Sofinas Yusof also known as Vivy Yusof is a proud Managing Director of Fashionvalet.com. She builds FashionValet with her husband also a CEO of FashionValet, Fadzaruddin Shah Anuar. She is one excellent example of an entrepreneur who starts her business since she was young. She was studied Bachelor Degree in Law at the London School Economics in United Kingdom.

When Vivy returned from overseas studies in 2010 and saw lack of online fashion retailers in Malaysia, she saw an opportunity to be filled. With her now-husband Fadzaruddin Shah Anuar, she set up a fashion e-commerce site offering a variety of local brand designers labels. What began as a start-up with a capital RM 100,000 and 10 local brands has grown into a multi-million-dollar ringgit business offering 300 brands from across Southeast Asia. In between, they secured RM1 million in reality TV show MyEG Make The Pitch which provided them with much-needed funds to further their marketing plans and expand their customer base. Like most start-ups, FashionValet’s challenges are ever evolving. In the beginning, it was about getting the word out with very limited typical. PROACTIVE

Steven Paul Jobs, also well known as Steve Jobs was an American information technology inventor and entrepreneur. He was the chief executive officer (CEO) and the chairman of Apple Inc, largest shareholder and CEO of Pixar Animation Studios, a member of The Walt Disney Company's board of directors following its acquisition of Pixar and founder, chairman, and CEO of NeXT Inc.

Jobs started a company on April 1st, 1976 together with Steve Wozniak,. “Apple I” was released a year later, and that was the start of the meteoric rise of Apple Inc. The Apple grew to become a $2 billion dollar company with thousands of employees until now.

Steve Jobs is recognized as a pioneer of the microcomputer revolution of the 1970s, with Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak. After Job’s death, his official biographer, Walter Isaacson describe him as ferocious drive revolutionized six industries that is music, phones, animated movies, tablet computing, digital publishing and personal computer and also a creative entrepreneur whose passion for perfection.
Carmine Gallo is an author who has followed Steve Jobs' career closely yeay by year, and wrote two popular books,  The Presentation Secrets of Steve Jobs and The Innovation Secrets of Steve Jobs , explaining how Steve Jobs' management practices and leadership have made Apple the world's most famous and valuable company.

Carmine Gallo observes that, when we look back, we can see that Steve Jobs has been gradually handing off public exposure and power to other key personalities within Apple since news of his health woes first surfaced. "I noticed that Tim Cook began doing a lot of the presentations for new product announcements. Jonathan Ive and Phil Schiller stepped into the limelight more," Gallo said.

While the media cameras at any given product launch remained focused on Jobs, Jobs began presenting the other personalities behind Apple in a more concerted way, acclimating the company, its customers, and the media to the look and feel of an Apple product launch sans Steve Jobs. Based on that, Carmine Gallo is confident that Apple's new leaders now have ample preparation to lead the company forward.

Jobs turned adversity into opportunity and focused on his two new ventures, Pixar and Next. He eventually returned to Apple to make it even bigger than before. He was a survivor of pancreatic cancer until it returned to claim his life in 2011. Jobs clearly accomplished so much with so little despite stresses that presented in his life. The important message here is that Steve Jobs never let his circumstances get in the way of his dreams. Jobs chose to be proactive and solution- focused towards opportunities versus being reactive to any negative events that occurred.

TEAM ORIENTED

Vivy Sofinas Yusof (Vivy) from Kuala Lumpur, managing director of Fashion Valet.com. Social media is where Vivy started her touch. Anything she is pictured wearing from FashionValet immediately turns into social media likes, page views and purchases.

Six years ago, Vivy started her blog Proudduck, which she kept while studying at the London School of Economics. She loved to write and started the online journal to pen her thoughts and experiences as a student abroad. It wasn’t long before she built a loyal following of readers, comprising mostly young Malaysian women who connected with her wit, humour and aspirational style.

Fast forward to 2010, when Vivy and her then-boyfriend, Fadzarudin Shah Anuar, returned from London. In the Big Smoke, widespread e-commerce meant that everything they wanted was a mere mouse-click away. Coming home, the absence of mainstream online retail was a glaring gap that begged to be filled.

So they set out to try something. Fashion was a clear opportunity for someone with a following of young, style-conscious readers.“I thought the target was there already,” Vivy says. “My readers are female, in their 20s to 30s, people who can spend and who are fashion-conscious.”

What 27-year-old Vivy has got going for her and her e-commerce site is her already sizeable and loyal audience..FashionValet has raked in close to RM10 million in revenue this year alone, after 3 and a half years in business. This year is also the year FashionValet turned profitable.

FashionValet shoppers know that dUCk scarves are constantly sold out. Bags that she’s seen carrying typically sell out within the hour, going to ardent fans who collect them in multiple colours. She is at once an entrepreneur, a celebrity of sorts and a social icon for thousands of young Malay women and everyday young mother in Asian.

"When first creating this business, I move with the group to find a local fashion designers. In the first month we managed to collect a total of 15 local designers but, at that time there was no office to operate.”

"Within two months of running this business, I hired four employees including the manager of Azwa Elena Azmi, 24, or Wawa and Anis Faezah Faid, 21, executive operating jointly responsible for the smooth running of this business because I was too busy, "said Vivy who serves as managing director FashionValet.net.

By having Fashion Valet, Vivy has fashioned unlimited opportunities. She admitted spent thousands of ringgit every month to fulfill her obsession with fashion.
"I make sure I have a shirt for each brand that I sell in FV. For me, local design and quality also beautifully styled but most do not have a medium to promote their brands.”

"But I still be selective in choosing a design that accompanies FV. I chose designs that are relevant to wear, simple and do not overdo it. Wawa an important role in this project because we often exchange views, " she said.

OUTCOME ORIENTED

Outcome oriented (JIMMY CHOO) is where “what matters” is the outcome. For example, whether you win or lose or achieve a certain target. That is presumably contrasted with something like a process orientation, where the focus is on the way you play or perform. This type of trait is different from process oriented entrepreneurs as they do not see the importance of a well-flowed performance if in the end of the day, they did not win and lose instead in the hand of their competitors. In other words, outcome oriented entrepreneurs are only care about winning the competition.

It is often said that outcome oriented people are ambitious as they are always hoping for success without even think if they did not win. They always set the biggest goals and never ever think to failed the competition as they always expect the winner is theirs. Their goals are simple just to be successful and the top entrepreneurs in the country or even in the world. So, people are taught to set smaller goals so it would be less dispirited experience for them and that they can achieve the goals easily.

This does not comply with one of the top male entrepreneurs in Malaysia which is Jimmy Choo. He is the best-known for its handmade women’s shoes. Jimmy Choo is a Malaysia shoes designer who was born in Penang, Malaysia in 1961. His childhood was at Hutton Lane, the side road from busy Penang Road where his father Chew Kee Yin was operating his business. Jimmy Choo used the craftsmanship he learned from his father, also a cobbler, to create some of the most coveted shoes in the world. His father wants him to follow his footsteps and by age 11, Jimmy Choo had made his first pair of shoes. Jimmy Choo stated that when he first started to make one, his father would not let him make a shoe and just ask him to only sit and watch. For months and months, he did that. After learning from his father, Jimmy Choo made his way to England in early 1980s to study at the Cordwainers Technical College in Hackney, where he graduates with honors in 1983.

Various challenges faced by Jimmy Choo but because of his determination in the face of many resistances and challenge to achieve his goals of ambition and its make his brand stayed until now. Jimmy Choo has a very strong spirit to cope even had to face too many challenges even very difficult. He always took challenge as opportunities. He never got afraid and always confident in face the challenge. He learns from mistakes. He just goes on because he knows nobody would never help him to success unless himself. One of Jimmy Choo’s achievement is Jimmy Choo’s design was spotted by the late Princess Diana. She had become regular customer of Jimmy Choo. Jimmy Choo’s sales started pouring since media had covered Princess Diana’s story wearing Jimmy Choo’s shoes. After that, Jimmy Choo never looked back. Not only Princess Diana being his customer, his design also spotted in popular movie. Madonna was the famous celebrities who patronized Jimmy Choo shoes. She was wearing it at her wedding.

Jimmy Choo went back to Malaysia after graduation, before deciding to try his luck in London. In 1986, he rent and old hospital building in London to set up his first factory, Lucky Shoes and then James Shoes before renamed it by using his name. he had to endure the worst four years of his life when his sales are poor. After two years, the popular Vogue magazines spotted his designs and feature his designs in a record eight full pages. Jimmy thought his golden time had come but sadly it did not happen. His appearance in magazines made him more famous but did not pour many sales. He often had to take instant noodles as staple food and live frugally. His luck changes two years later when the late Princess Diana spotted and immediately fell in love with his designs and become regular customer. When Diana’s story wearing Jimmy Choo’s design is covered by media, sales start bursting in and Jimmy did not look back again.

In April 2001, Jimmy retired from his business and sold his 50% share of his company to the former UK Vogue accessories editor, Tamara Yeardye Mellon. Jimmy was a partner but did not running the business. Then, Jimy try to get back his branding that should be Malaysian. He hired brokerage company to bid again his brand at price of 500 illion thousand or RM 2.4 billion. He accidentally slip that he released his brand since he want to be a millionaire and encircle the world with the money. Bid of Jimmy Choo getting complex since there are about ten under bidder. In the end, Mellon sold out her share in Jimmy Choo to Labeluz for 525 million.

As a result of his diligence, Jimmy Choo got many awards are considered a great tribute to him and also in the eyes of the state. Many awards that he got from various aspects. Everything is the result of an idea Jimmy Choo designs that brilliant enough to earn a place in the eyes of the world. Hence, a lot to be proud of his achievement by Malaysians. For example, he was awarded the title ‘Datuk’ by the Sultan of Pahang on its success in the field of fashion in 2000. The next year anyway, namely in 2001, he was the winner of “The World’s Outstanding Chinese Designer”. In 2002, he was also one of the first Malaysian to be awarded the “Order of the British Empire.” OBE (Knighthood) by the Queen of England, Queen of Elizabeth, Queen Elizabeth II. This achievement also puts his status at the same level with other receivers such as David Beckham, Rod Steward, JK Rowling and Pierce Brosnan. These results are impacted Datuk Jimmy Choo to move to another with more advanced. Datuk Jimmy Choo always got the win in winning the design competition shoes and other fashion items that gradually the world. Jimmy Choo is also an icon of the brand companies to attract more people to remain loyal to their products.

As the results, Jimmy Choo determined that he could win when he dare to hired the company to bid for him. He knows what the best for his company. Jimmy Choo has become an inspiration for many hearts. Besides, Jimmy Choo also the icon of the brand to attract more people to remain loyal to their products.

OPEN CULTURE

‘Open culture’ (SERGEY BRIN and LARRY PAGE) is defined as a knowledge should be spread freely  and its growth should come from developing, altering or enriching already existing works on the basis of sharing and collaboration, without being restricted by rules linked to the legal protection of intellectual property. In a context of globalization, the consequence is that all citizens should have equal access to information. Intrepreneur that I choose are Sergey Brin and Larry Page. They are known as the person who established a very popular and extremely important search engine called Google.

Page was born in genius family where is father, Carl Victor Page, was a professor of computer science at Michigan State University. The senior Page was also an early pioneer in the field of artificial intelligence, and reportedly gave his young son his first computer when Larry was just six years old. Several years later Page entered the University of Michigan, where he earned an undergraduate degree in engineering with a concentration in computer engineering. Advanced Management Systems in Washington, D.C., and CogniTek in Evanston, Illinois were company where Page started his first job. Because of his innovative thinker with a sense of humor as well, Page success to built a working ink-jet printer out of Lego blocks. After that, he was admitted to the prestigious doctoral program in computer science at Stanford University  due to his eagerness to advance in his career. There, he met Sergey Brin who was already enrolled in Stanford's PhD program in 1995.

Brin, a native of Moscow, Russia was a son of a professor, and came to the United States with his family when he was six. His father  taught math at the University of Maryland, and it was from that school's College Park campus that Brin earned an undergraduate degree in computer science and math. The two men connected on the intellectual level and started experimenting with their new designs of search engines in the university computers.‘BackRub’ was their project’s name, and it was funded through the National Science Foundation. Together Brin and Page developed the PageRank algorithm, which is used by Google to rank web pages. The successful running of their project for many months on the University computers convinced the duo to start their own company. They both put their doctoral studies on hold and with financial investment in the form of a $100,000 cheque from Sun Microsystems co-founder, Andy Bechtolsheim, formally incorporated their company, Google Inc, in California.

Sergey Brin and Larry Page are known as the person who established a very popular and extremely important search engine called Google. In this globalization era, it is important and crucial for people to have a friendly and easy search engine in order for us to get and excess the information that we required. That is where Google came and play its role because Google are the only search engine that so easy to use and it’s so convenient as if you are one click away from the information that you want. Sergey Brin and Larry Page manage and success to do so because they are open minded, especially to new idea and also suggestions. They believe that when a person talk, we don’t look and judge the person who talked, but we looked and judge what they talked. By doing so, they manage to gain lots of idea and that surely can improve and also give a positive impact to their company.

FAILURE IS AN OPTION

Failure is an option are the term that refer to someone who work really hard to get back from an unsuccessful efforts or from an unlucky accident that happen to them to be more specifics, this ‘failure is an option’ term are the term that we use or apply to describe a person who manage to make a come back from a major failure in their life to career.  There is no one entrepreneur that we can take as example for this traits. He is Dato’ Sani Salleh.

His full name is Dato’ Wan Mohammad Sani bin Salleh. He took a diploma in Business Management College Sunway (1994). Dato’ Sani was Managing Director Sani United Sdn Bhd. His achievement are Awarded Degrees Indera Mahkota Pahang (DIMP) which carries the title Datuk by the Sultan of Pahang, Sultan Ahmad Shah (June 2009) and the Outstanding Entrepreneur Award Malay Chamber of Commerce Malaysia (DPMM) Kuala Lumpur (April 2009).

When we asked why the transportation industry is at stake, Dato’ Sani said, for no other reason except that sector are so challenging and require a strong will because it is not easy, but also quite a lot of risk. So, we can see that Dato’ Sani has a big responsiblitiy and confidence to do this transportation business.

‘’Ipoh 26 December 2009 - 10 passengers died when a double-decker bus that Sani Express bus skidded and hit the road at km 272.7 north-south highway leading to the north, last Saturday morning. The fatal accident occurred and horror around 1:00 this morning in the middle lane, about 5km from the highway barn. The bus departed from Klang 9.00pm pointing Kangar carrying 48 passengers and a driver and his assistant. All 10 victims died at the scene at the ground floor of the bus. Two other passengers were also seriously injured. The incident is caused when the bus hit the road divider to the left of the highway leading to most of the victims were passengers left the ground floor of the bus. (Akhbar Utusan Malaysia)’’.

Sani Express bus had experienced a terrible accident, but Dato’ Sani not give up easily. He was thinking about alternatives that can help him push up the company. He also quickly realized to achieve success there would be failures along the way and took that risk founding Sani Group in 2011. Dato’Sani strong work ethic and integrity have earned him numerous awards and commendations.

Dato’ Sani believed, the industry is changing and it’s all about adding value now. To chase the billion mark, he was separating the group companies and allowing them to focus more strongly on their core market and strengthen the operations so that each can contribute more efficiently to the whole as a whole. And now he also had successful has its own hotel. Her business is thriving and has reached his goal. And now he just needs to monitor and to plan for his company continues to thrive. So it is evident that ‘failure is an option’ found in personality of Dato’ Sani. Eventually, he became a successful and famous entrepreneurs from various aspects. Although, the company he set up through many crises and severe criticism from the public, but he bounced back to prove that his company also the best and can successful like others transportation company.
